From Homelessness to a New Beginning | World Homelessness Day 2025
Every year on October 10th, World Homelessness Day reminds us that homelessness is not simply the absence of a home — it is a complex social issue that affects millions of people worldwide. Across Europe, nearly 1.2 million people experience homelessness on any given day. In Greece, thousands live without stable housing, in conditions of “hidden homelessness” — in cars, warehouses, or temporary shelters.
Homelessness Is Not a Choice
Homelessness does not only refer to those who sleep on the streets. It affects people of all ages and backgrounds who live without financial security or a support network. Despite progress, social inequality and the lack of sustainable policies continue to isolate thousands of people across the country.
Voices of Ithaca: Stories of Strength and Hope
To mark World Homelessness Day, Ithaca presents the video “Voices of Ithaca”, a collaboration with filmmaker Alkistis Kafetsi of Break The Frame. The video shares three real stories of people who faced homelessness and found the courage to rebuild their lives.
- Yiannis, 80 years old, found care and dignity again through Ithaca’s support, improving his health and rediscovering hope.
- Georgia, a single mother, joined Ithaca’s team and, within six months, found stable employment and provided her child with a safe home.
- Giorgos, after years of living on the streets, regained his self-confidence through job counseling. “If you don’t want to be helped, no one can help you,” he says. “Now I’m taking back my share of life.”
Care as the First Step Toward Change
These stories show that homelessness is not a personal failure — it is the outcome of systemic inequalities, lack of access to healthcare, employment, and social support. True change requires holistic solutions, including psychosocial support, empowerment, and reintegration into the workforce.
At Ithaca, we stand by those experiencing homelessness every day, offering practical support and human connection. Because when people are given the right tools, they can build a new beginning — one filled with dignity and hope.
