Heatwave and Homelessness: When Summer Becomes a Survival Challenge
Summer heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be deadly for those living on the streets. Heatwave and homelessness is a dangerous combination, as unhoused people lack access to basic protection: shelter, shade, hydration, and safe indoor spaces.
How You Can Help
If you see someone experiencing homelessness during a heatwave you can make a difference by offering:
- Cold water bottles or thermos
- Hats, light-colored clothing, sunscreen
- Fresh fruit like watermelon or oranges
- Electrolyte drinks or hydration powder
- Light snacks (nuts, crackers, bars)
- Wet wipes, portable fan, water spray bottle
- Info about shaded areas or municipal shelters
- Emergency numbers (e.g. 112 or 166 in Greece)
Cool Relief Centers
During heatwaves, cities open air-conditioned public buildings for vulnerable individuals. These safe zones offer temporary relief and rest. Below, we’ve included two images listing current cooling stations.

Heat Makes No Exceptions—But Care Can
Homelessness is not a choice, and heat doesn’t discriminate. But compassion can make a huge difference. For some, summer means surviving, not vacationing. A simple gesture—a bottle of water, a kind word—can go a long way.
